The decision to start a small business is a life-changing one: Is this really the perfect business idea for you?

The decision to start a small business is a life-changing one: Is this really the perfect business idea for you?
How will this decision affect your future?

You are usually required to make a significant financial investment and spend an insane amount of your time working hard to keep things on track.

It can also be emotional, and can easily be the most important thing in your world for a long period of time while you get things up and running.

For these reasons and many more, starting a small business can be much like getting hitched. You’ll have to learn many lessons, make compromises, and put up with some rough patches.

Here’s what to expect from your first year of marriage OR owning a small business:

1. You’ll Adjust to Your Finances Being Intertwined

When you start a small business or get married, you’ll likely have to make more careful financial decisions and consider how your purchases and investment may affect others. One of the most prominent reasons that small businesses and marriages alike fail is fiscal irresponsibility, but there are ways to prepare yourself.

Tito Phillips, of Naijapreneur.com, suggest that you “look into financial management systems and to classify your expenses into two categories; urgent expenses and important expenses. Your urgent expenses are your recurrent expenses, meaning they are periodic in nature. Your important expenses are your capital expenses; meaning they are not periodic in nature but are necessary for the continuity of the business.”

2. You'll Realize the First Few Years Are the Hardest

Starting a business makes you grow in ways you never thought you would. It can be a blessing and help you find out what you’re made of, but it can also be extremely hard and painful when things get tough, just like a marriage.

Anna Wickham of TheWorldlyBlend.com says, “[being an entrepreneur is] similar to being in a relationship: when you are growing as a person and working with others, there will inevitably be times when you make mistakes and have to apologize for them. It’s all about how you learn from those mistakes and change accordingly.

3. You'll Have to Effectively Communicate

When you start a small business you are not only selling a product or service – you are selling yourself. You need to be able to not only convey your message in a timely way, but you’ll also have to learn to convey your meaning through your body language. This is similar to a relationship in that sometimes it is not as much what you say, but how you say it and what message your non-verbal communication is sending.

As Marie Huntington said in a recent article in The Houston Chronical’s Small Business Section, “Nonverbal cues affect how people understand what you are attempting to communicate, and their reaction corresponds to how you delivered your message. If you are expecting a certain response by the receiver of your message, your nonverbal communication affects their response.”

4. You’ll Lose Some of Your Independence

When starting a small business, like it or not you must think about data security concerns that you didn’t before, and this means you will have to be more careful about how and where you conduct business. You’ll lose some of your freedom and have to reconsider using the unencrypted WiFi at your local cafe or emailing yourself a password so you don’t forget it. Getting married is similar in that you will inevitably have less “me’ time and have to prioritize in order to maintain balance. Though it may take more time to do things well, it’s worth it in the end.

“Running an online business using the WiFi at your neighborhood coffee shop is a data security disaster waiting to happen. It may seem limiting and like overkill to only work on a secure connection when you’re just starting a business, but in reality this is when you are the easiest target for a hacker,” says Blake Sanders of BroadbandExperts.com.

5. You’ll Have to Learn to Stand Your Ground Confidently

When entering into a marriage or starting a new business venture, there will always be nay-sayers who will call you crazy, criticize your judgment, or try to make you stray from your dreams. They might say you’re being idealistic, that your business idea or future life partner are not right for you, or that you haven’t planned well enough to move forward. In both instances, you’ll have to be prepared to respectfully tell them to keep their opinions to themselves. In the end, this might make them respect you and your business even more, but either way you must stand your ground.

“In my experience the stings are the stokes to the fire that keep you going. If you’re pissing people off, it’s a good indicator that you’re doing something right. And, if your response is a sturdy argument for why your idea will work, it will reinforce your determination to prove them wrong,” says Megan Broussard in a recent article on The Muse.

While there are plenty of ways to get sidetracked, fail, and lose faith when starting a small business OR entering a new marriage, there are also plenty of mentors and online resources to help you navigate your journey to lasting success. While it’s amusing to correlate an important event in your business life to an equally important personal event, you can realistically apply many of the lessons you’ll need to learn universally. If you invest in yourself and work your butt off, you’ll likely have a successful marriage AND small business in your future. Source by: Business

A New Approach to Interviewing: How to Hire a Star Performer

A famous Sly Stone lyric contends that, “Everybody is a star.”
The problem is that not everyone who responds to your company’s job post is going to be one.
How can you determine which applicants might truly shine working for your company?
Here are some ideas on how you can more easily separate the brilliant leaders from a group of average joes.

You know the drill. The candidates come into a conference room, wearing the only nice set of clothing they own and that they only wear to interviews (and weddings and funerals). You and make some of your senior people ask a set of broad questions along the lines of, “Why do you want to work here?” and, “Tell us about yourself,” and, “What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?”

Then you and your staff pick someone using criteria that might as well have been based on who was wearing the nicest outfit as the answers to any of these standard interview questions.

Studies show that these kinds of interviews not only are a waste of time in determining an applicant’s job suitability but can actually impair your ability to find the right people. The Boston Globe reports that as much as we might feel we are good judges of character, studies since the 1980s show that “an unstructured interview—a changeable series of questions that elicits a somewhat random set of information—can cloud our judgment. Whatever your gut tells you about that job candidate you interviewed, the researchers say, you shouldn’t listen.”
Test Ability With a Real Work Sample

Laszlo Block, a Google senior vice president of People Operations (leave it to Google to come up with a cooler term for HR), cites a study that analyzed 85 years of research on various assessments to figure out which were the best predictors of on-the-job performance. The most effective tool was a work sample in which applicants had to demonstrate they can do something similar to that which they will actually have to do as part of their job.

Block notes that even this won’t tell you the whole story about an employee’s likely future job performance as it doesn’t measure the person’s ability to collaborate, adapt to uncertainty and learn. These, among other characteristics, can predict not only job performance but also how well a person will fit with your company culture.
Let Others Conduct the Interview

Google is famous for its data-driven job interviewing process, what Block describes as a combination of structured interviews and multiple assessments keyed to measure a prospective employee’s aptitude for a specific job role. It also disposes with the “brain teasers” that Google was once famous for.

In a New York Times interview, Block calls these brainteasers, “a complete waste of time. How many golf balls can you fit into an airplane? How many gas stations in Manhattan?...They don’t predict anything. They serve primarily to make the interviewer feel smart.”

Another key component that differs from the traditional interview: using panels of employees who are not going to be the applicant’s direct supervisor or peers to conduct the selection process. The Washington Post reports that this removes the likelihood of subjectivity (e.g., the hiring manager won’t lean towards a friend of a friend who is owed a favor). Google’s analytics also show that conducting multiple follow-up interviews doesn’t increase confidence in employee suitability for a position.

Consequently, it’s capped the number of interviews it’ll put a candidate through. Some positions may require a faster interview process than others, but the company uses no more than four interview sessions and on average the entire process should take no more than 45 days.

Want Your Employees to Be More Productive? It’s Time to Redecorate

Business owners routinely try to think of ways to boost worker productivity.

You've probably tried to come up with ways to increase the amount of work your employees do.

Incentives and other high-flying, expensive attempts might work to some degree, but you might be missing out on a simpler solution: redecorating.

There's a reason that the row of cubicles has become the image of employee dissatisfaction and all that is wrong with today's workplace.

Sitting in a cubicle all day, hunched over a keyboard and squinting at a small computer screen isn't conducive to real productivity. If you want your workers to get more done, here are some suggestions for improving your office environment:

One of the simplest things you can do to boost office worker productivity is to let in more natural light. According to an abstract published by researchers at Northwestern University, workers who received more white light exposure than their counterparts during work hours slept more -- and better -- at night than their counterparts. Well-rested workers are more productive and make better decisions at work. Another study indicates that employees in an office with a window stayed on task 15 percent more of the time than their colleagues without windows.

If you want to improve worker productivity, allowing more natural light into the office as a whole, or looking for other ways to create a well-lit environment can help.
Adjust the Colors

The colors you choose in your work environment can also have an impact on your workers, according to research reported by Inc. magazine. Some of the best colors to use in an office environment include:

White, which opens up an area and works well with natural light. White can promote creativity.
Green is another color that promote creativity.
Blue works well in environments where detail is important. Blue is considered calming.
Yellow offers optimism, so a splash of this color can help in your office. However, the Inc. article warns, it can also lead to eye fatigue. Use yellow sparingly to add a dash of refreshment to the office, but don't overdo it.
Orange is a color that is designed to energize. This energy can help boost performance and productivity and improve endurance.
Carefully consider your color scheme with thought toward what is likely to refresh your team and help members stay focused.

Add Standing Desks to Your Business Environment

You might be surprised to discover that redecorating with standing desks as opposed to lower desks that require sitting can help improve productivity. However, there is ample evidence that standing desks are ideal for the work environment. Major tech companies like Facebook and Google offer their employees standing desks.

Reports find that not only do standing desks help employees focus better on the task at hand (increasing productivity), but that standing desks can be better for health. Healthier employees are, in general, more productive, and they are less likely to be absent from work. Consistency in the workplace can be helped by healthy employees. When you combine standing desks with good lighting, overall health and wellness can mean better results regarding productivity.

Even if you don't turn your office into one full of standing desks, you can still improve worker productivity with the furniture you choose. Comfortable, ergonomic chairs can help workers avoid distractions associated with uncomfortable working conditions. Consider offering different options to workers so they can work the way that feels best to them.

You might be surprised to discover that adding a second monitor to your workers' stations can improve productivity. According to a VIBE study, adding another computer screen helped workers boost their productivity by 9 percent. For more mundane tasks, like cutting and pasting, a second screen improved productivity by as much as 50 percent. It's easier for workers to complete their tasks with a second monitor, and that means they can finish quicker and move on to the next task.
Keep Frequently Used Items Handy

One of the biggest hassles to many workers is having to look for what they need, or the inconvenience associated with using equipment that isn't located nearby. Give some thought to the flow of your office. Where is the printer located? Are there filing tools nearby to help employees stay organized?

Whether your workers are looking for a specific paper, or whether someone needs to make a photocopy, you want things to be simple. Pay attention to the way the office is laid out, and to what employees are most likely to need. Keep frequently used supplies on hand and easy to access.

Keep the environment neat and tidy. Not only does this make it easier for your employees to find what they want, but it will also help them feel more comfortable. It is true that clutter can distract employees. If you can provide the tools your workers need to cut the clutter, productivity will improve because there will be fewer distractions.
Add a Plant

Believe it or not, adding a few plants can help improve worker productivity. According to research published by the American Psychological Association, adding household plants to the office environment can boost productivity. Greenery -- and nature in general -- can help workers mentally refresh themselves and improve their productivity.

Nature images can also help boost worker efficiency. Humans have an innate connection with nature, and being able to interact with it, or even look at pictures related to nature, can reduce stress and anxiety and help workers better focus on their work.

While you don't want to clutter up the office space, adding strategically placed plants can enhance the environment and improve your worker morale.

While it's not exactly redecorating, you can get better results when you ventilate your work-space. Better ventilation can mean improved productivity, according to a study from the Center for the Built Environment. Better air circulation is good for the body, and it also provides a jolt of refreshment to workers. Once again, these realities help workers focus better and perform their tasks in a more efficient matter.

3 Easy Ways To Cut Office Expenses

Office expenses can cut into your profits more than you would think.

As a business owner, one of your main focuses is to increase profits, and so in order to accomplish this you must look for ways to reduce costs when possible.

To remain competitive and keep your business moving forward, being cognizant and proactive when it comes to payments and expenses can help ensure the profitability of your organization.

Between your internal payments, external expenses, and everything that goes through accounting, there are many effective ways to make sure that you are not wasting any money.

It is common to think that everything your business is spending money on is necessary. When your business runs smoothly and similarly day after day, it is natural to think that your equilibrium is optimal and that no cuts can be made. In many situations this can be true – there are many costs that are important and must remain.

However, there are also dozens of costs and expenses that fly under the radar and don’t get enough attention. These expenses, which many see as small or unchangeable, account for a large portion of your office’s expenses.

One of the difficulties, as you may be aware, is that you are already juggling dozens of other tasks and projects – adding another to your plate is no fun. However, until you can maximize your revenue by minimizing unnecessary costs – other projects and agendas are being under-optimized. Here are three effective ways that you can cut office expenses.

1. Save Money on Employees

Stay away from making unnecessary hires and expanding your team before it is financially appropriate and stands to increase the value of the company. Cutting costs on your employees begins with the hiring process. Make sure to only hire when you need to fill a need, or a gap, in the company.

Merely “Growing your company” or “expanding your team” aren’t sufficient reasons to hire. When your company would measurably be improved by adding a new employee – that is when you add one. Make sure to have a system in place that calculates the maximum value each department has per employee, and from there extrapolate to determine how many employees will fit into each department.

When possible, consider replacing long-term employees with services like Fiverr, Staffly or Odesk to fulfill short-term or project-based needs. Fiverr is a popular, easy-to-use platform that enables users to find workers based on work which they need completed. It’s quick, simple, and to the point. Similar in some ways to Fiverr, Staffly is an online platform that matches employers with employees. It aims to quickly connect retailers with screened, insurance and trained staff – all by using their mobile phones.

Staffly is a go-to for employers looking to find someone to cover a few shifts, and for staff members looking to make extra income by helping out with a project or task. Odesk (also known as upwork.com,) matches freelancers and contractors with job opportunities and paid projects. For an employer, this is a great outlet to find mobile developers, web developers, customer service agents, virtual assistants, and more.

2.Watch Your Cable and Electricity

The average cost of internet in the US is $38 per month, and that can go all the way up to $150 per month, per individual. Between Verizon, AT&T, Xfinity, and RCN – there are dozens and dozens of cable providers to choose from, and choosing the best one for you is crucial for saving money. And, believe it or not, your company’s TV bill can really make a dent in your overall expenses.

One of the easiest ways to save money on your company’s TV bills are to know which cable providers are in your zip code and what deals they offer. Depending on your specific location, some cable providers might be far more favorable than others. Better yet, some providers will be offering discounts depending on where your business resides.

Your best option is to compare different prices and options before settling on any. This could save your company hundreds or thousands of dollars in the long run. In addition, make sure to find the best broadband coverage. By strategically choosing your cable and broadband providers based on advantageous price offerings in your area, you can drastically increase your net savings per year.

3. Go Digital

Using the cloud and other online storage software tools will make your office not only more efficient in terms of production, but also in terms of cost. Using the cloud, storage spaces, and computing services are held by a third-party provider, and thus office storage and software costs will be reduced. In addition, rather than using your customized or standard-paying email accounts, word processing, and other tools, take advantage of Google and Microsoft’s free version which you can obtain online.

Believe it or not, the average employee uses over 10,000 sheets of paper per year, which adds up to a couple pounds per day. By reducing this and going digital, it enables you to send data anywhere you want to send it. This allows you to streamline communication with clients, employees, and partners, and give them access to information right away.

Which projects and materials can become digital? Almost everything. The only items that will have to remain as physical copies are insurance documents, employee records, and safety reports. While it may seem like a small change, going paperless will help you save money, give you quick access to info, reduce clutter, help the environment, and promote easier disaster recovery.

Kampot pepper defying drought fears

The increased cultivation area of Kampot pepper has offset losses due to drought, with farmers of the premium quality peppercorn estimating that production could reach 80 tonnes in the coming harvest, nearly 40 per cent more than last season.
“Even though our farms were impacted by the drought, the total size of harvested land has increased,” Ngoun Lay, president of the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association (KPPA), said yesterday.
The association’s 242 members have planted pepper trees on 100 hectares. Lay said he expects 40 hectares will be ready for the next harvest in late-February, yielding 70 tonnes to 80 tonnes of certified Kampot pepper.
This would be a 38 per cent increase over last season’s harvest, which saw 58 tonnes produced on 25 hectares under cultivation.
Kampot pepper was awarded the World Trade Organisation’s geographical indication (GI) status in 2010, linking the quality of the product to its origin and unique attributes.
Exports and prices rose sharply after receiving the status, but prices have levelled off at around $15 per kilogram for black pepper, $25 per kilogram for red pepper, and $27 per kilogram for white pepper.
Demand, however, continues to grow. Lay said orders have already been received to cover 80 per cent of the upcoming season’s production. About 70 per cent of the orders were placed by international buyers, while 30 per cent were for domestic supply.
The market’s appetite for the premium pepper has encouraged more farmers to join the KPPA. Lay said 30 families have applied for membership, which would expand the association’s total cultivation area by about 50 hectares.
But the members must first be carefully vetted to ensure the product’s quality.
“We always have an annual meeting where we announce the new members and release information on what we have already accomplished and what we plan to do in the future,” he said. “Fifty hectares of pepper farms will be added to association after we check whether or not they meet our criteria.”
He said only members living in Kampot province and producing peppercorns according to the GI designation’s specifications can use the label.
KPPA recently found a number of merchants falsely claiming their product was certified Kampot pepper, though without the distinguishing printed codes on the packaging of the original.
“Our peppercorn has a reputation in the international market because of its quality and this has fuelled its high demand,” said Lay. “We found there is a lot of fake Kampot pepper in the market . . . and we have called the economic police to investigate these cases.”
Phok Ly, a 69-year-old farmer with 3,000 pepper trees under cultivation, said the association’s efforts to maintain quality have resulted in higher incomes for its members.
“Our peppercorn sells at a high price and has been recognised as the finest quality pepper because we follow the association’s guidelines,” he said.
Farmer Sok Huy, who cultivates 20,000 peppercorn trees on 10 hectares of land, recently applied to join the KPPA. He said peppercorns sold under the Kampot pepper label fetch twice the price of those without the designation.
“It’s really important to be a member of KPPA because we get a certificate from the association [to certify the Kampot pepper designation] and can sell our pepper either directly to the buyer or through the association,” he said.
Huy said he expects to receive membership because his farm has followed the association’s guidelines since it first planted pepper trees. KPPA representatives will inspect the farm by the end of the year to determine its status. Source by: Phnom Penh Post

Rainsy blasts embassy in KL over worker abuse

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy on Tuesday called out Cambodia’s overseas embassies for not doing enough to protect Cambodian workers, singling out the embassy in Malaysia, where Cambodian maids have faced a pattern of abuse.

The Cambodian National Rescue Party president, accompanied by CNRP deputy chief Kem Sokha, made his remarks in a talk with the Cambodian Youth Association in Japan.
“It is very regretful our embassies have not paid attention, not only in Japan but also in Malaysia, where women are mistreated,” Rainsy said in his videotaped speech. “[The embassy] has not cared, nor defended the Khmers at all.”

Rainsy said that because authorities are unreliable, victims should turn directly to lawmakers and the media. He called on Cambodian labour representatives overseas to provide victims’ contacts to lawmakers and newspapers for investigation.

When there is enough evidence of mistreatment, the authorities will have to take action, he said.
Neither the embassy in Malaysia, nor the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman could be reached for comment yesterday.
But Cambodian People’s Party spokesman Sok Eysan dismissed Rainsy’s allegations saying that embassies “not only in Malaysia but also in Thailand and China have resolved problems in many cases”.
Eysan went on to add: “However, if [labourers] go with properly licensed companies, there are no problems. Those that have problems have mostly gone there illegally, which is difficult for our embassy to solve.”
More than 8,000 Cambodian women work in Malaysia, according to government data, despite a 2011 ban on sending workers there. Those that continue to go do so unofficially, often through Vietnam, according to rights groups, who called the travel ban a “cop out”.
Meanwhile, in a meeting with members of the Japanese parliament and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Seiki Kihara yesterday, Rainsy and Sokha asked Japan to keep an eye on Cambodia’s upcoming 2017 and 2018 elections, in light of the recent violence against two CNRP lawmakers. Rainsy and Sokha said that the Cambodian people are hoping for a change in leadership.

According to Sokha, Kihara told the CNRP delegation he has closely followed the October 26 attack and remains concerned.
“Such a problem can repeat. He worries about the safety of lawmakers,” Sokha wrote on his Facebook wall. “[Kihara] indicated that [Cambodia] needs political stability, but free, fair and open elections must be guaranteed.”
In response, Eysan labelled the CNRP’s trip as “diplomatic talks only” that will not influence the government.

“The Japanese government does not officially recognise the opposition party. Japan recognises the Cambodian Royal Government that was elected.”

Cambodia’s energy policy out of balance

Expensive and unreliable electricity continues to weigh down Cambodia’s ranking on the UN-accredited World Energy Council’s annual Energy Trilemma Index, according to a report released yesterday.

The Kingdom ranked a low 115 out of 130 countries on the annual index, which assesses countries according to how well they manage the trade-offs between three competing dimensions of energy policy: energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability.
The index reflects the challenges that countries face in developing a sustainable energy policy, with balance scores given as letter grades. An A grade and low ranking is given to top performers, while a D grade and high ranking is assigned to poor performers.
Cambodia maintained its sub-par CDD balance score on the 2015 index, seeing last year’s gain in energy security – a measure of a country’s ability to meet its current and projected energy demand – reversed to rank 121st overall.

The Kingdom’s rank in energy equity – a measure of the accessibility and affordability of energy across the population – edged down to 116th. It also lost ground and ranked 70th on environmental sustainability, which scores the use of renewable or low-carbon forms of energy.
Cambodia relies heavily on imported fuel and electricity for energy security, and costs of electricity are among the highest in the world. The government’s efforts to increase domestic power generation, including new hydropower and coal-burning plants, carry environmental trade-offs.
Joan MacNaughton, executive chair of the World Energy Trilemma study, said a balanced approach is necessary to transform energy systems to meet the three goals of the Trilemma.
“Our research underlines how priorities vary from country to country – though energy security is key for all,” she said in a statement.

“For countries to move up in the rankings and remain ahead of the pack, they must adopt prudent, forward-looking energy policies to meet decarbonisation goals and maintain competitiveness.”
Sweden and Switzerland were the only nations to receive an AAA balance score on this year’s index. Canada ranked top overall for security, while the US maintained its top ranking on affordability.

Alibaba made $1 billion in 8 minutes, the world's single largest day of shopping, Single's day

Eight minutes. That was how long it took Alibaba to hit $1 billion in sales today on Single's Day, China's Black Friday equivalent.
By midday, that amount had crossed US$9 billion, equalling Alibaba's take for the whole day last year. China's second largest e-commerce company, JD.com, has recorded 14 million orders thus far.
Single's Day is the biggest online shopping day in the world, with several billion dollars worth of e-commerce transactions taking place. The International Data Corporation (IDC) told CNET that this year's sales will surpass $14 billion, which equates to over AU$20 billion or £9 billion. To put that into perspective, last year Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales in the US amounted to a relatively paltry US$2.5 billion.
The origin of the day is something that is uniquely Chinese. It was invented in the 1990's as sort of an anti-Valentine's Day, encouraging single citizens to sooth their lonely hearts through retail therapy.

Alibaba chairman Jack Ma flagged off the event with a massive bash in Beijing that saw American Idol alum Adam Lambert perform and Kevin Spacey, in character as the President Frank Underwood from Netflix's House of Cards, deliver a personal message to Chinese shoppers.
The result of this insane day of shopping has been felt around the world, with companies like Bellamy's, an Australian producer of items like milk powder, running out of stock in its native country to feed the Chinese appetite for the product. Source by: CNET

Pailin is a province at the northern edge of the Cardamom Mountains in the west of Cambodia, 25km from the border of Thailand. This province is surrounded by Battambang Province, and was officially carved out of Battambang to become a separate administrative division after the surrender of the Khmer Rouge in 1996. Known also for the precious gem mining activities, this province offers beautiful sceneries of mountains, waterfall and lush bamboo forest.

Other interesting sites for tourists include Wat Rattanak Sorphon, a Burmese style pagoda more than 570 years of age. Beautiful Burmese characters are inscribed on the gates. This is evident of early Burmese settlement in this area. Indeed, the Burmese were the first people to discover the precious gems and Pailin became the largest mining center for sapphires and rubies in Indochina then. Source by: http://www.pailin.info/

Phnom Yat has a good number of places where visitors could still see the gem-mining activities today.  Being a border town, there are also casinos in Pailin.

Cambodia’s Opposition Leaders Call on Japan to Deescalate Tensions With Ruling Party

Leaders of Cambodia’s opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on Tuesday called on aid donor Japan to deescalate tensions with the ruling Cambodian People’s Party following a brutal attack on two of their lawmakers outside of parliament in the capital Phnom Penh late last month.

On Oct. 26, CNRP lawmakers Nhay Chamreoun and Kong Sophea were dragged from their vehicles and assaulted by protesters after attending a meeting at parliament and the opposition has blamed the CPP for orchestrating the incident—an allegation that the ruling party denies.

CNRP Deputy President Kem Sokha, who is traveling with party chair Sam Rainsy in Japan this week, said they warned at a press conference in Tokyo that political tensions in Cambodia could threaten the country’s elections set for 2017 and 2018, and called on the Japanese government to intervene.

“We urged the international community—especially Japan—to reduce tensions related to the July 22, 2014 political deal in order to ensure free and fair democratic elections,” Kem Sokha wrote on his Facebook page, referring to a “culture of dialogue” established between the parties at the time.

The agreement ended an 11-month CNRP boycott of parliament over perceived irregularities in the country’s 2013 election. This year, the CPP and CNRP agreed to form a new electoral body, though relations between the parties have since broken down, in part over opposition criticism of the government’s handling of a border dispute with neighboring Vietnam.

Kem Sokha also demanded a fully transparent and independent investigation into the Oct. 26 attack on Nhay Chamreoun and Kong Sophea, who are currently recuperating from broken bones and facial lacerations in a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

While three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the attack, the CNRP considers the arrests insufficient and said last week its lawmakers would boycott parliament until their safety could be guaranteed.

The CNRP has called the assault a repetition of past violent incidents against other party members and suggested it was organized by the CPP in response to an anti-Hun Sen demonstration by Cambodian expatriates in Paris, which infuriated the prime minister during his visit in late October.

Before his departure to France, Hun Sen had warned his detractors that if Cambodian opposition supporters were to hold their planned demonstration against him while he was in Paris, his supporters would attack and create trouble for Sam Rainsy's supporters back home.

Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha have discussed political developments in Cambodia during meetings with lawmakers and officials from Japan’s ruling and opposition parties since their Nov. 9 arrival in the country, which has provided more than U.S. $2.25 billion in development aid to Phnom Penh since 1992.

Japan has promised to help Cambodia with electoral reform, and ahead of their visit Sam Rainsy told The Cambodia Daily the opposition leaders would discuss the assistance Tokyo had committed “and what our concerns are,” adding that “the only hope for Cambodia is to have credible elections.”

Anti-Vietnamese rhetoric

On Monday, president of local policy research group Future Forum Ou Virak appealed to Cambodia’s ruling and opposition parties to end the practice of using anti-Vietnam rhetoric for political gain, saying cross-border issues should be resolved diplomatically.

In a letter sent to Hun Sen and the leaders of the CNRP, he said the two parties should establish a joint foreign affairs policy towards Vietnam and implement it accordingly, he said, adding that they should refrain from instigating any violence and discrimination as a priority.

His suggestion was rejected, however, by officials from both the ruling and opposition parties.

CPP spokesman Sok Eysan told RFA there is nothing controversial about relations between Cambodia and Vietnam, and slammed the opposition for calling Hun Sen’s administration a Vietnamese puppet government.

“If the government worked for Vietnam’s interests, it would not have delayed demarcation of the [controversial] border line up to this point,” he said.

“There have also been a lot of standoffs [between the two countries on the border issue]. So this shows the government will not allow Cambodia to be a subordinate state to any country.”

Pol Ham, acting chief of the CNRP in Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha’s absence claimed he had not seen Ou Virak’s letter, but said the opposition had a right to criticize the government’s current approach to relations with Vietnam.

“[Cambodia’s] international relationship [priority] with its neighbors is to make sure we have good relations and mutual respects [between countries] and no one country would take advantage of the other,” he said.

In July, Cambodia requested maps from France, the United States and the United Kingdom to verify its border demarcations, following accusations by the CNRP alleging that Hun Sen’s government had ceded land to Vietnam at various spots along the border, based on its own set of incorrect charts.

Cambodian activists claim that Vietnamese authorities and villagers have threatened to “kill them” on several occasions while they monitored suspected encroachment in disputed areas along the border, which spans some 1,270 kilometers (789 miles) between the two countries.

Other issues, such as a perceived increase in Vietnamese immigration to Cambodia, have also made many Cambodians wary of Vietnam’s influence over their country’s affairs.

An estimated 1.7 million people, or one in four Cambodians, died in what came to be called the “Killing Fields” after the ultra-Communist Khmer Rouge took power in 1975. The regime was unseated when Vietnam invaded the country four years later.

Lawmakers demand compensation

Ou Virak’s appeal came as Nhay Chamreoun and Kong Sophea filed two separate complaints with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court Tuesday demanding 100 million riel (U.S. $24,700) each in compensation from the perpetrators of the attack that targeted them.

Choung Choungy, the lawyer who filed the complaints on their behalf, told RFA’s Khmer Service that the court had accepted the documents and said he expects the authorities “to arrest the perpetrators and bring them for prosecution.”

The three suspects who were arrested last week have been accused of causing violence and damaging property. Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak has said authorities are continuing their efforts to find other suspects thought to be involved in the incident.

Over the weekend, Hun Sen’s son and CPP lawmaker Hun Many took to Facebook to threaten legal action against any individuals linking him to the incident—ostensibly in response to images circulating online showing him alongside suspected assailants of the two CNRP lawmakers, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

Many has stated that he was present at the Oct. 26 demonstration, he claims it was only in his capacity as a lawmaker to receive a petition from the protesters demanding the resignation of Kem Sokha from his position as vice president of the National Assembly, or parliament. Independence Day celebrated as parties bicker

Independence Day celebrated as parties bicker Leaders take to Facebook to share political messages

Cambodia celebrated its 62nd year of independence from France yesterday, an opportunity that leading figures from both of the country’s political parties quickly took to promote their own agendas.
During the official ceremony, attended by thousands of students, members of the armed forces and others, King Norodom Sihamoni, accompanied by Prime Minister Hun Sen and other top officials, laid a wreath and ignited a torch at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh.

According to tradition, the “Flame of Victory” will burn for three days to commemorate the Kingdom’s independence from France on November 9, 1953.
Although the event was largely apolitical, a post on Hun Sen’s official Facebook page heralding Independence Day was less neutral. In the post, Hun Sen – who has repeatedly warned of civil war should the opposition prevail – reappropriated the opposition’s mantra of “change”, saying Cambodia’s history showed regime change to be a road to genocide.

“On March 18, 1970, Lon Nol made a coup against the former King [Sihanouk] and plunged [the country] into the killing fields, a lesson which shows [the effects of] ‘change’ caused by toppling the head of state in order to take power, and now Cambodia has to move from that very dangerous road,” the post read.
“The Cambodian People’s Party, of which I am the president and prime minister, is determined to protect the constitution and the King and ensure peace for Cambodia.”
The prime minister did not, however, mention his own role as a military commander in the Khmer Rouge revolution that ushered in the so-called killing fields.
Meanwhile, Kem Sokha, vice president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, also took to Facebook to congratulate Cambodia on its independence – and to make an implied critique of the ruling CPP. “I would like to appeal to all Khmer politicians to be independent from foreign countries and fully ensure [Cambodia’s] sovereignty,” Sokha wrote.

Sokha did not elaborate on which countries he was referring to, but the opposition has long accused the CPP of being backed by Vietnam, a country some of its members also accuse of encroaching on Cambodian territory at the border. With relations strained following the beating of two opposition lawmakers on October 26, political analyst Chea Vannath said the fact that both of Cambodia’s main political parties were implicitly attacking each other on Independence Day showcased the Kingdom’s enduring divisions.

“In Cambodia, the divisions between the political parties is much more acute,” she said, noting that independence day celebrations in other countries were typically occasions for national unity.
“It means that the maturity of democracy [in Cambodia] is still at a very early stage.”
A cheerier message about Cambodia’s national day came from United States President Barack Obama, who highlighted his wife Michelle’s visit to the Kingdom in March in an official message from the White House delivered late last week.
“I hope that Cambodians, both home and abroad, have a healthy and happy Independence Day celebration,” the letter read.

President Obama & Former President Clinton Discuss about Health Care

Ke Leng, the heroine of Cambodian petanque, scooped a gold medal at the 2015 Women’s Petanque World Championships in Bangkok at the weekend.
Ke Leng, coming off the back of a gold medal at the previous world championship, quickly qualified for the quarter finals with a six point victory.
She faced Canada’s Maryse Bergeron in the last eight of a competition that is in its 15th year and features over 100 entrants, winning 41-21, before progressing to an easy win over Audrey Bandiera of France, the birthplace of petanque, with a score of 28 to Bandiera’s 9.
Ke Leng faced strong rival Mouna Beji of Tunisia in the final, which she won 33-24, securing her gold medal and her defence of the world championship in the process.
Ke Leng celebrated her second win at the world championships by waving the Cambodian flag.
Ke Leng also competed in the team event, alongside her countrywomen Um Chanthrea, Uk Sreymom and Un Sreiya, but with less success.
While the team topped the group stages, they lost in the quarter-final to defending world champions Thailand.
Alongside her gold medal, Leng can expect a 120 million riel ($30,000) award from the government.
The celebrations which greeted Ke and the rest of Cambodia’s medal-winners at Phnom Penh airport were somewhat subdued, with only representatives from the National Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, and the Cambodian Boules and Petanque Federation there to welcome her.
However, NOCC General Secretary Vath Chamroeun told the Post before he departed to welcome Ke Leng at the airport that “by winning a gold medal . . . Ke Leng brings a great honour to our country,” and that her win “also salvages our country’s image after we failed to win any gold medals at the SEA Games in Singapore.’’
He also added that: “According to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s recommendations, we will organise an official reception party event for her in the coming days.”  Source by: phnompenhpost

Cambodian fighters ready for Thai test

Three Cambodian fighters get the chance to show off their powers in mixed martial arts when they enter the cage at Full Metal Dojo 4 in Bangkok on Saturday.
The MMA event will the have the home fans in a frenzy when the headline fight between veteran Thai fighter Jomhod Kiatadisak and Cambodian kickboxing champion Vorn Viva in the 77.7kg category gets under way.
Chan Heng and Thai Rithy, who are training at the A Fighter gym in Phnom Penh alongside Viva for the MMA event in Thailand, will also be seeking wins for the Kingdom.
Chan Heng will face home fighter Detchadin Srosirisuphathin at bantamweight level, while his young teammate Thai Rithy will face Swedish featherweight Fabian Pettersson.
Although vastly experienced in their disciplines, Viva and Jomhod are to make their debuts in the MMA cage, and although Viva has only been training in the sport for a relatively short time, club coach Chan Reach said he is a natural fighter and a fast learner.
“He has been training in MMA for a while now, but he has not been doing so in the past few weeks due to his busy schedule. However, I feel he is prepared for this fight because he is a well-trained fighter who is in great shape,” Reach said.
Viva has a lot of experience in kickboxing, especially Kun Khmer, and has beaten Thai boxers consecutively in previous fights at home.
Experienced home favourite Jomhod, 44, nicknamed the “King of the Ring”, is the holder of many world titles in Muay Thai at different weights, but this is also his first foray into MMA. He has an impressive record in Muay Thai, with 276 wins, 24 losses and three no contests, with 80 of his wins coming by knockout.
Heng, 36, holds an MMA record of 12 wins and two losses. “He is one of my most experienced fighters and one of my best students – he is a good grappler who usually wins by the third round. He fought on Bayon TV on Saturday as well, so he is always active,” Reach said.
His opponent Detchadin is a relative newcomer to the sport with an MMA record of two wins and one loss.
Thai Rithy, 21, another A Fighter martial artist, will be expected to show his power when he faces debutant Pettersson, 25 and fighting out of the Legacy Gym in Thailand, in a featherweight clash.
Reach said: “I expect all of my students to do well. I am bringing three top Khmer fighters to fight in Thailand to represent Cambodia.
“I feel confident in my students but anything can happen. We cannot underestimate our opponents.
“We must respect each other as sportsmen and fight hard to win for our country, and also to create friendship between Cambodians and Thais through combat sport.”
